LONDON: Chelsea have signed goalkeeper Edouard Mendy of Rennes for 22 million pounds.

The 28-year-old goalkeeper agreed to a five-year contract and saw the Blues spend £ 222 million on the transfer window this summer.

The purchase should also put pressure on the number one goalkeeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga after making mistakes in several previous matches.

The Spanish goalkeeper signed a contract with the most expensive transfer record of 72 million pounds, once he lost his position in the hands of veteran goalkeeper Willy Caballero at the end of last season.

In the meantime, Mendi said: “I am very excited to join Chelsea. It is a dream to be part of this squad and work with (manager) Frank Lampard and all the coaching staff.

“I’m really looking forward to meeting my teammates and can’t wait to start the action.”

Mendi helped Rennes finish Ligue 1 last season in third place to secure a place in the Champions League for the first time in the club’s history.

Now Mendi is the seventh player tied by Chelsea this summer, meaning Lampard has spent RM1.7 billion even though two of the seven players arrived for free.

Central defenders Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr are among the players arriving for free from Paris Saint-Germain and Nice.

Judge Ziyech needs £ 36 million from Ajax and £ 45 million for Ben Chilwell (Leicester).

Meanwhile, Chelsea paid 47 million pounds to release Timo Werner from a contract with Leipzig.
