MADRID: Barcelona squandered a chance to lead La Liga when they were stunned by Granada 2-1.
Barca had a chance to overtake Atletico Madrid by one point but Granada bounced back to record a victory at the Camp Nou, thus reopening the title race this season.
Lionel Messi scored his 33rd goal of the season to put Barcelona ahead but Darwin Machis and Jorge Molina sparked Granada’s resurgence.
With a one -match advantage already in use, Barca now face a tougher rival to snatch the top spot when the next action is at the Valencia site and then host Atletico at Camp Nou.
Barca remain in third place, matching Real Madrid’s points tally as Atletico continue to lead by two points, while Sevilla are in fourth place – three points behind the leaders.
“It was a great blow, we were very disappointed. We were negligent on the defensive side. We opened up too much space,” said Barca manager Ronald Koeman.
One of the top four teams has a chance to confirm the La Liga title next month, after the top three teams dropped points this weekend.
Real Madrid were held to a goalless draw by Real Betis on Saturday before Atletico failed to distance themselves when they lost at the hands of Athletic Bilbao.
The result opened the way for Barcelona to play less than one game, which eventually followed in the footsteps of the top two teams.
