LONDON: Mikel Arteta praised goalkeeper Bernd Leno who saved two penalties for Arsenal to win the fourth round of the League Cup over Liverpool.

The 5-4 victory in the penalty shootout, after a 0-0 tie, brought Arteta-led Arsenal to the quarterfinals.

Arsenal have previously beaten Liverpool on penalties in the Community Shield and once again England champions Jurgen Klopp were disappointed.

Joe Willock scored the winning penalty after Leno saved a shot from Divock Origi and Harry Wilson.

Liverpool goalkeeper Adrian saved Mohamed Elneny’s kick, but Alexandre Lacazette, Cedric Soares, Ainsley Maitland-Niles and Nicolas Pepe found a target for Arsenal to book tickets to the quarter-finals against Manchester City.

“Bernd is great. When needed he is there. You need a great individual performance to win at Anfield.

“I have confidence in Bernd. I know him well enough. We do not want Emiliano Martinez to leave but it may be the right choice,” Arteta said.
