LONDON: Liverpool fans posted a statement of displeasure on Twitter after Mike Dean was named as the referee for the English Premier League (EPL) match against West Brom at his opponent’s site tonight Malaysia time.

In addition, Kevin Friend will handle the refereeing assistant (VAR) when Jürgen Klopp’s squad visits The Hawthorns Stadium. It is now understood why Liverpool fans are disappointed with the news.

Last October, Dean caused controversy at Anfield when he awarded Sheffield United a penalty that was previously just a free kick. Fabinho’s challenge to Oli McBurnie did not seem dangerous but Liverpool were punished which sparked controversy.

Dean was lucky when Klopp’s side won 2-1 against The Blades.

In the case of Friend, he failed to avoid the anger of the German operator. In February 2019, Klopp was fined 45,000 pounds for comments questioning Friend’s integrity as a referee.

He blamed the match officials for making an early mistake during the draw against West Ham.

While Liverpool are desperate to get three points, there will surely be heightened anger for the Merseyside club if Dean or Friend spark more controversy.
