LONDON: Liverpool and Manchester City’s efforts to create historic victories first found them in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley next month after both teams passed the last eight group early this morning.

City finally overcame Southampton on their third try of the season with a 4-1 win while Liverpool needed a late Diogo Jota goal to put Championship side Nottingham Forest 1-0.

Forest had previously eliminated defending champions Leicester and Arsenal on their way to the last eight and could present another surprise at City Ground.

“It’s an orderly trophy -winning match,” Klopp said. “I know they’re not going to get anything out of it, but a big compliment to them, they played really well.”

Klopp made seven changes with Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Andy Robertson among the rested stars and it had an impact on Liverpool’s performances.

Despite recording good results, City also struggled in the first hour at St. Louis. Mary when Southampton who had previously tied the English champions twice this season caused problems for them once again.

“We started really well and after that we forgot how to play,” Guardiola said. “We know it’s tough because Southampton are one of the most organized teams.”

Crystal Palace, meanwhile, will meet Chelsea in another semi-final after thrashing struggling Everton 4-0 at Selhurst Park.

Marc Guehi, Jean-Philippe Mateta, Wilfried Zaha and Will Hughes all blasted home goals as the Eagles continued their good performances in the first season under Patrick Vieira.

“Going to Wembley was an amazing thing,” Vieira said.

“You can hear the atmosphere of the stadium, fans; this is what they want and we want to give it to them.”
