Man City Secured Top Spot In Group C

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom: Bernardo Silva believes Manchester City’s progress from the Champions League group stage with the highest point record is a sign of how the club has improved in Europe, but realizes that Pep Guardiola’s squad will only be judged at the knockout stage.

In four seasons with Guardiola, City failed to advance to the quarterfinals despite hundreds of millions being invested by owners from Abu Dhabi to win the tournament for the first time.

Despite Guardiola making some changes early this morning, a comfortable 3-0 win over Marseille saw City lead Group C with the club’s new record, 16 points out of a total of 18.

“I hope it is a sign of how we are improving,” Silva said of the record. “We always wanted to do better than last season, so we were very happy with our group campaign.

“It was a great start for us – we knew it was not enough but it was a great start. We went to the last 16 and the target was to do better than we did in the previous three years and that is what we will try to do.”

While City have secured the top spot in the group, Guardiola took the opportunity to rest some key players ahead of Monday’s early visit to Manchester United in the Premier League.

“We didn’t play to get points but we were serious about it. It was a good performance,” Guardiola said. “Sixteen points, just one draw, it’s a good group stage competition.”

City goals were scored by Ferran Torres, Sergio Aguero and Raheem Sterling.
