MANCHESTER: Manchester United have ended Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure as manager at Old Trafford after three years, following just one win in seven English Premier League (EPL) games.

Shaken by struggling side, Watford 4-1, yesterday was the culmination for United’s board of directors, who have stuck with Solskjaer in recent weeks despite losing at home to Liverpool and Manchester City.

“Manchester United have announced that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has resigned as manager,” the club said in a statement.

“Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and with regret, we have already reached this difficult result.

“While the past few weeks have been disappointing, we should not forget all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundation for long -term success.”

The Norwegian left United, who are realistically out of the EPL title race, 12 points behind league leaders Chelsea – seventh in the league and knocked out of the League Cup.

Former midfielder Michael Carrick, who is part of Solskjaer’s coaching staff, will take over for the crucial Champions League clash against Villarreal on Wednesday.

Zinedine Zidane, who won three Champions League titles alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Varane at Real Madrid is reportedly the top choice to replace Solskjaer with Leicester manager Brendan Rodgers and Ajax boss Erik ten Hag also in the competition.
