LONDON: German legend, Lothar Matthaus admits that England has the opportunity to win a meeting against Germany in the 16th round of Euro 2020 – as long as the match is not dragged into a penalty shootout.

He saw England having the best chance to set aside their old enemy but still haunted the failure of penalties in the past.

“England has a chance to win but not with a penalty kick. If the penalty, I’m sure Germany will win. So they (England) need to win within 120 minutes.

“We are always good in penalties, if they need to be determined by penalties, I think Germany is the option because you need to see what happened in 30, 40 years before, 1996 and some other penalties.

“This is a great pressure on England players – they read the newspapers and they know the story of a penalty kick.

“But you can not be too negative and pessimistic. You need to be optimistic for the future.

“When you see England, they have great players who play in the Premier League (EPL) and the best clubs around the world. Their players win trophies with their respective teams.

“England showed a good performance at the World Cup three years ago – better than Germany so I think they have a chance.

“If they play at the highest level, they can beat Germany. Germany is ready to win against any opponent.”
