LONDON: Lionel Messi has agreed to stay at Barcelona for another two years according to Spanish newspapers.

The club’s president, Joan Laporta, is said to have successfully asked the player’s agent who is also his father, Jorge, to renew his contract until June 2023.

Messi’s claim to remain at the club comes after a year of uncertainty when the Argentine was linked with Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain while an announcement would be made “soon”.

Spanish website El Confidencial claims Barcelona will also announce that Sergio Aguero will join the Catalan club after stating this season will be his last at the Etihad.

Reports in Spain say Messi’s final salary and other payments have not been finalized due to an internal audit of Barcelona’s finances following Laporta’s election as President.

El Confidencial reports: “The proposed formula to pay Messi’s new salary for 10 years is being finalized, as Messi intends to remain at the club when he retires.”

The 33 -year -old joined the Argentina squad yesterday after taking a private flight from Barcelona’s El Prat airport with his wife, Antonela Roccuzzo and three sons, Thiago; Matthew and Cyrus.
