ROME: AC Milan retained a five-point lead at the top of Serie A after beating Sampdoria 2-1, while Napoli jumped to third with a win over Crotone.

Franck Kessie’s penalty before the break and 77th minute shot by Samu Castillejo was enough for the seven-time European champion to collect 26 points overall and maintain the gap over Inter Milan in second place.

AC Milan manager Stefano Pioli praised the action of his team that came down without a major blast Zlatan Ibrahimovic, defender Simon Kjaer and midfielder Ismael Bennacer.

“This is a team that makes the most of every situation, even the negative ones, to prove their worth.

“I am often surprised by the maturity of the players. They are never disappointed with a bad decision or let it bother their minds,” Pioli said.
