Mueller Is The Main Bet Against Atletico

BERLIN: Thomas Mueller could revive hopes of being called up by Germany as Bayern Munich begin their efforts to defend their Champions League crown at home against Atletico Madrid early this morning.

After recording 21 assists for goals in the Bundesliga last season, Mueller continued to improve his performance by scoring five goals and assisting for four assists as of the 2020/21 season.

The 31-year-old scored two goals as his side won 4-1 against Arminia Bielefeld last Saturday when Robert Lewandowski also scored two goals for Bayern.

His good performance with the club sparked new hopes for Germany to call back him who was removed by Joachim Loew from the team in 2019 alongside Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels.

“Everyone can see that I am in good shape. Let’s see what happens,” Mueller told ZDF broadcaster even though Loew has yet to make a decision.

After an early season plagued by fatigue and problems on the defensive side, Bayern need Mueller’s creativity to face Atletico who have so far conceded just one goal in four games this season.

The Bavarian squad had a perfect record at home against Diego Simeone’s squad when they beat them twice in Munich in 2016.

However, Atletico eliminated Bayern from the semi-finals in 2015/16 and the German team is still worried about the Spanish opponent.
