LONDON: Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford will rest for up to three months after deciding to undergo shoulder surgery.

Rashford, 23, underwent a scan yesterday to address issues that have plagued the England striker since the end of last season.

He will undergo the surgery later this month.

Rashford played five times for England at Euro 2020 and failed to complete a shot when he lost a penalty shootout at the hands of Italy in the final.

Yesterday, anti-racist protesters gathered at a Rashford mural in Manchester that was scratched after the player was insulted on social media.

Black teammates – Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka – also failed to complete penalties – were also victims of racist insults.

Previously Rashford was considered the country’s hero following his success in lobbying British Prime Minister Boris Johnson to provide free food to school children in distress during a pandemic.

United begin pre-season preparations for the Derby on Sunday before starting their Premier League campaign at Old Trafford against Leeds on 14 August.
