MADRID: Real Madrid revived their La Liga title when they beat leaders Atletico 2-0 as their neighbors suffered their first league defeat of the season.

Real, who managed to save themselves in the Champions League by advancing to the last 16, are now third in the league, three points behind Atletico.

It was a disappointing night for Diego Simeone’s squad who have gone through 26 unbeaten matches in the league since February.

It involved 17 wins and nine draws. Real were also the last team to beat Atletico in the league.

“We reaffirmed the improvement we have shown in the many sections facing Sevilla and Borussia, and once again gave a good performance,” said Real coach Zinedine Zidane, referring to his team’s victory over the past few weeks.

“There are criticisms that make us disappointed, but there are also those that make us stronger.

“We competed very well from the first minute to the end, we must be satisfied everything was completed.”

Real were in front after 15 minutes through Casemiro’s header before Jan Oblak’s own goal.
