LISBON: Manuel Neuer admits he feels sympathy for compatriot Marc-André ter Stegen after Bayern Munich scored eight goals over Barcelona in the Champions League.

Ter Stegen failed to block Bayern Munich’s goal as the German side put themselves in the spotlight to win the tournament with an 8-2 win over the Spanish club.

Neuer did not work hard on the other side of the field and admitted that he knew how his compatriot felt but realized that the decision did not affect his position in the national team.

The two goalkeepers are fighting for the No. 1 spot for Germany with Neuer dominating for the most part.

“I sympathize with Marc. I know something like this is not easy for a goalkeeper,” Neuer told Sky channel.

“But we play in the Champions League and this has nothing to do with the national team.”

The pair have been at loggerheads since September when Stegen expressed frustration with the public when he was not given the opportunity to wear the German No. 1 jersey.
