VAR – Red Devils Video Assistant

LONDON: Manchester United lead the English Premier League this season in goal-scoring by Video Assistance Referee (VAR) – with seven overall this season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad is probably one of the most beneficial teams from the video technology compared to the teams that fell victim to VAR.

From Sadio Mane’s goal in October to Jordan Ayew’s goal last Thursday, United can be considered very lucky.

Aside from the cancellation of the opponent’s goal by VAR, United also often won penalties – including one over Aston Villa after Bruno Fernandes stepped on Ezri Konsa.

On October 22, Liverpool’s 100 per cent victory record was tarnished after a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford.

Liverpool should have been able to go home with three points and maintain the record, but Mane’s goal was disallowed by the referee for allegedly hitting the ball.

Liverpool once again saw their goal canceled by VAR in a 2-0 win over United on 19 January.

This time Roberto Firmino became a victim after VAR found Virgil van Dijk fouling David de Gea before the goal.

Chelsea were also impressed with United’s “luck” through VAR when

Harry Maguire escaped punishment for kicking Michy Batshuayi and their two goals were disallowed during the 2-0 defeat to United on 17 February.

In addition to Liverpool and Chelsea, Watford, Everton and Crystal Palace also saw their players’ goals canceled when they met United.
